DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: GIS in Elections — it’s More Than Just Maps \nSPEAKER: Robert Ryan\, GIS Analyst\, St. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners \nDESCRIPTION:\nSt. Louis County Board of Elections has had its own mapping department since the 1970’s as administrating\nelections is a tough\, unforgiving business. One mistake can make people think elections aren’t to be trusted.\nMost election offices don’t have GIS users\, but St. Louis County’s high population and complex political\ngeography make hiring them a necessity for responsibilities beyond just map-making. The data we began\nmodernizing in 2017 is now used in so many ways that it allows us to show our staff and the public specific\ninsights into how the Election is progressing. We field a wide assortment of questions: What am I voting on? \nWhich races are getting the turnout? Which polling places are busy? Which polling places or absentee sites\nneed more staff and equipment? Which polling places are most likely to see paperwork issues? How fast can\nwe get the ballots back to the office so they can get tabulated? This unique presentation is one that you won’t want to miss! Your pets will thank you for it! 🐕🐈 \nDid you know Missouri is the puppy mill capital of the U.S.? Last July\, T-REX hosted a one-of-a-kind hackathon around animal welfare\, specifically puppy mills. In collaboration with organizations like Bailing Out Benji and Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation we provided participants with strong data and problem statements to help them come up with tools to help these organizations fight for our dogs and cats. The results the hackathon were so incredible\, we picked two groups to present at Geosaurus Unleashed: one group in October and one in February.

Today\, geospatial technologies are being used to plan for sustainable tribal growth and development while managing data for an effective government. \nSPEAKER: Garet Couch\, GISP\, is a citizen of the Shawnee Tribe and is the President/CEO of the National Tribal Geographic Information Support Center (NTGISC)\, also known as Tribal GIS\, is a Native American led 501(c)(3) organization that provides geospatial information systems (GIS) technical assistance and support to Tribal governments in their utilization of GIS to inform decision-making in the stewardship of Tribal lands and resources\, as well as the health and well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native peoples.
